Review of The Thin Man

Dashiell Hammett intrigues me, overall. I have only read this book and The Maltese Falcon so far. Like Poe, it would seem that Hammett didn’t differ much in his first-person POV characters, as Nick Charles and Sam Spade have very similar voices, if not the same voice.

I liked The Thin Man more than The Maltese Falcon, though. The supporting characters are more likeable and solid, and the mystery is much easier to follow and care about. It certainly made more sense, and the solution to the mystery made me grin. The title set me up with different expectations, though. I suppose that’s my own fault.

Hammett’s style is delicious on its own, though, and one should read at least one of his books just for the experience.
